  • 45th Annual FL Governor's Cup 200

The 45th Annual Florida Governor's Cup 200 is right around the corner...

We made some big strides last year towards our ultimate goal of making this one of the biggest events in the entire State, not the least of which was making it a two-day event...

This year we are taking another step forward by adding the Limited Late Model 50 on Friday night... We hope to see all the Limited Late Models here for that event... There will be NO entry fee for either the Limited Late Models or Pro-Trucks.

Entry forms for EVERY Division are available at NewSmyrnaSpeedway.org (link on right or click Governor's Cup on the menu)

Since we are expecting quite a few non-regulars, I am trying to assemble as much Driver information as possible... I hope to have a COMPLETE roster printed in the Program for EVERY division, not just Super Lates...

From everyone at New Smyrna Speedway and FASCAR, allow me to say thank you to everyone who has had input and helped and supported us in our efforts for this years Governor's Cup.

**** Don't forget Laps are For Sale for $100.00/lap and the money will be spread out through the entire field, not just the leader. If all laps are sold, that's $20,000.00 added to the total purse. To purchase laps or for more information, please contact Kim Brown at 386-547-2879 ****

Are they trying to continue the influence of Ricky Brooks with the hope of trying to get some tie in with the Derby? I would love to see them secure some sort of provisional or something like that for the winner. Also, are the motor rules in line with the Derby? I know some of that was discussed during speedweeks.

Bubba... as far as I know Ricky Brooks will be Head Tech for the Governor's Cup again this year and Super Late Model rules will be the same as they were for Speedweeks (Spec Motor 390 Carburetor or Restrictor Plate)

        Just 87 days to go!

To me that is a good thing, now we just have to promote it and give the drivers a reason to be here.

Trivia question: who was the last OUT-OF-STATE driver to *WIN* the Florida State Stock Car Championship/Florida Governor's Cup?

I'm thinking Butch Miller in 1985 at Sunshine Speedway. For 25 years, no out-of-state driver has won this event. And if you don't count the '85 race as a "Governor's Cup", then you go all the way back to 1981 - *29 years ago* - before you get to another out-of-state winner. Is there just no incentive for drivers to haul down here from up north any more for the Governor's Cup? The Derby draws quite a few cars from up north, but we can't get any for the Cup any more. Why is that?

I'm pretty sure the Cup was raced at DeSoto in '84, and at Sunshine in '85 (Bob has the video from the '85 race at Sunshine posted somewheres ). The only three years I don't think it's been run is 1980, 1986, and 1987 ('86 and '87, the "Triple Crown" weekends were NASCAR All-American Challenge Series/All-Pro Super Series weekends if I recall correctly).

GOVERNOR'S CUP WINNERS SINCE 1965 (First year of the Governor's Cup):

1965 - Wayne Reutimann Zephyrhills, FL Golden Gate Speedway, Tampa
1966 - Bobby Brack Miami, FL Golden Gate Speedway, Tampa
1967 - Dumont Smith Satellite Beach, FL Golden Gate Speedway, Tampa

Rick the Rule has been in place since February for World Series AND Governor's Cup... we changed NOTHING... It has been written that way since the beginning of the Season.

I feel for ya Mark, you guys are doing the right thing - and like you said - it has been that way since Feb. So keep after it and try to get something worked out with the panhandle area drivers to come down.

                    Please Rick

Some of you race car drivers and or owners never seem to be happy and have to complain about someone or something. The track is trying to get more drivers to the track that is BETTER FOR THE FANS and real race car drivers. If you race at that track that should be an edge. WHAT DO YOU WANT OUT MOTOR THEM TO? Don't you want other FL,and out of state race cars to race against?Well go faster and turn left.

No Moe I don't think they want to race, no one wants to run heat races anymore, now they want an advantage over all the out of state cars I think they want to show up and have the track hand them a check just to fill the pits. Most of the so called racers on here would rather bitch, moan and complain rather than put their car on the track I think the racing would be more enjoyable but what do I know.

The use of the 390 carb or restrictor plate on the Spec engine is only enforced during the Governor's Cup and Speedweeks. The rest of the time they can run a 750 carb. Why is that? Hummmm? Put the Spec engine on the 390 ALL YEAR.

Last year around this time, NSS said the spec motors would run the 390 from now on. Then, certain people complained and they changed the rules. Now, your gonna make them run the 390 in the governors cup.In my opinion, they should be running it all year.

Rick, i can agree with you. If i had been running it all year, i suppose i would want to keep it the same.

Better yet (and cheaper), go back to the days of 8lbs. per cubic inch.

Ok so u guys think it would help to get rid of the spec motor ? that must be because ur not paying 30.000 for a steel head or 9.1.I think maybe you guys dont understand how hard we all work to get these cars to go fast.It is a big deal, alot of guys havnt got a 1200.00 dollar 390 carb.or res.plate .meaning some will not come. And as far as the guys north of ten, arent comin, spec motor or not, till they put up the money.snoball pays double all the way through the field.its about the money .I would love to see alot of cars from the north .I'm a racer, I love the competetion.but all the testing we do is for not, with the 390.so you guys keep taikin about things you know nothing about.all us locals are still goin to beat um.Its just a lot hard when the rules are changed in anyway.see you guys at the track..If ur not on your computer that is..have a nice day...
