UNIQUE SSCS MODIFIED KING OF THE BLACKTOP EVENT AND SSCS STREET STOCKS SET FOR SATURDAY AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY
Auburndale Speedway returns to racing action after taking the Memorial Day weekend off with a big event for the Sunshine State Challenge Series (SSCS) Open Wheel Modifieds plus a 50-lap contest for the SSCS Street Stocks. Also in action will be the V-8 Bombers, Q Auto & Accident Attorneys Mini Stocks, Scramblers and the Mini Cup cars.
The Modifieds will be running an all-star format-style "King of the Blacktop" event that will total 75 laps in length sponsored by The Results Companies. The first segment will be 40 green flag laps then the cars will be stopped on the front stretch. Teams will be able to make any adjustments to their cars... any that can be made without using a jack. The field will be inverted at that point, however no more than half of the lead lap cars will be inverted and no drivers will be eliminated. The race then finishes up with the second segment of 35 laps.
As far as the points go in the SSCS Modified Series, "Steady" Eric Rudd of Naples has lived up to his nickname by running up front in every race and using that consistency to take over the point lead by three points over Ft. Myers driver L. B. Skaggs who is coming off one of the biggest weekends of his career with his third place finish at the Bristol (TN) Motor Speedway on May 20th. Skaggs won the first SSCS Modified race held at Auburndale this season back on February 4th.
It looks like Rudd and Skaggs will probably decide the Modified points championship among themselves as no one is remotely close to the pair. Roger Blevins, Steve Arnold and Shawn Harper are third through fifth in points but each has missed races this year while Rudd and Skaggs have started all of the events so far.
Josh Todd, the "Polk City Flash," debuted a new car in the last SSCS Modified race here and came home a winner. He will again be a favorite. Other drivers expected to compete are Devin McLeod of Zephyrhills, Bobby Blake of Eustis, Live Oak's John Coffman, Herb Neuman of Inverness, Tony Altiere, Chad Rutherford, Jeff Firestine and others who should be attracted by the $1500 winner's purse.
Ander Jackson of Punta Gorda has taken over the point lead in the SSCS Street Stock division by 12 markers over Kenny Gibson of Venice who made his Super Late Model debut at Bristol driving for John Coffman's team. Unfortunately a blown engine in practice prevented Gibson from making the big show there. Danny Caylor of Lehigh is third in points followed by Bradenton's James Nanney and local Auburndale hot shoe Steven O'Steen.
Richard Elkins, Jr. of Winter Haven returned to racing in a big way by winning the SSCS Street Stock feature back on April 15th then also won the 25-lap event here on May 13th. Elkins will be trying to go for a hat trick Saturday night. Other drivers expected include Joey Bifaro, Donnie Powers, John O'Steen, Dennis Wilson and the team of Ross Francisco and Josh Lindsey.
Pit gates open Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm with practice for the Modifieds and Street Stocks from 3:30-4:30 pm. V-8 Bomber, Mini Cup, Mini Stock and Scrambler practice will be from 4:30-5:30 pm. Grandstand gates open at 5 pm with Street Stock and Modified qualifying at 6 pm.
Racing begins at 7 pm with 8-lap heat races for the Mini Cups, Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Mini Stocks, Scramblers and V-8 Bombers. Feature racing follows with the 50-lap run for the Street Stocks followed by 15 laps for the Mini Cups and 20 laps for the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Mini Stocks. After intermission the Open Wheel Modifieds hit the track for their two-segment 75-lap race followed by 20 laps for the Scramblers. The evening of racing concludes with a 25-lap run for the V-8 Bombers.
Adult admission for all this racing remains at just $15 with seniors 55+ $13. Children ages 5-12 are just $5 and all kids 4 and under get in free. The family 4-pack is just $32 for two adult and two children’s admissions (a $40 value). Pit passes are $30 per person and all parking is free.
