I moved from Florida and now live about 20 miles from this track. I was very impressed with this track. Good car counts and really close racing in all classes, no leader ran away from the pack. I was suprised to see a lot of super late models brought in on rusty old trailers, not nascar type trailers you'd see in FL. It was interesting also that if #2 spun the leader, #2 would voluntarily go to the back, it was good sportsmanship. You can probably attribute the high car counts to the fact that folks have all winter to work on thier race cars and the season is relatively short may- october I believe.

      This helps a lot:

Maximum of 10” steel racing wheels. Track width will be checked outside to outside of the tire on the bottom – 82” maximum. Tires will be the Hoosier 970 with a 2 tire per night impound program, exactly like we have had in the previous 5 seasons.

I think these rules help more than anything for the modifieds:

Feel free to copy these rules and use in any way, shape or form. Let’s keep asphalt modified racing affordable and all on the same rules!

ENGINE: Any American make engine allowed. Steel block. No machine work to the outside of block (lighting). Wet sump oiling system only. One (1) naturally aspirated two or four barrel carburetor only. (No fuel injection) No magnetos

I would highly recommend that FLorida track owners/promoters take a look at this track and how it is run. 5 classes, great engine rules, rules packages that run for 3 years, max tire rule, multi pack discounted tickets for both the pits and the grandstands, tow money, fair payouts, skybox and corporate seating decks etc.....

                are they still NASCAR affilliated?

As far as I know they are NASCAR affliated, they display the Nascar logo prominately on the grounds. I believe Ed Howe and family own the track. One thing I noticed also that I think helps there success was they are more agressive in thier advertising than FL tracks. A few weeks before the season started they put out scores of roadside signs, like you see politicians use, even as far out as where I live. They get some column space space in the sports section of the newspaper as well with race results and stories. I attended a monster truck-demo derby kind of event there in summer and they said whoever brought their ticket stub back next Sat. nite gets free admission. They occasionally race on odd nites of the week sometimes , like a Thursday nite.

                    that's what i thought.

this is somewhat confusing to me as i was under the impression that NASCAR had their own short track rule book. how is Kalamazoo writing their own rules changes and keeping a NASCAR sanction? does NASCAR not write rules for classes below Modifieds or what?

Kalamazoo Speedway is NASCAR sanctioned. There is not a specific rule book that NASCAR puts out for its weekly short tracks. Each track maintains and implements their own rules. As for Kalamazoo, we run outlaw bodied super late models there. We are allowed to only purchase 2 tires per event, $1,000 to win, $200 to start, 50 lap feature.

The tire is the Hoosier 970, which is a great equalizer because it allows the lower HP guys compete with the high HP guys. The end result is higher car counts.

Kalamazoo Speedway is owned by Gary Howe....NOT Ed Howe. They are not related.

And...YES, they do a great job with equalizing the rules and maintaining them now for the next 3 years. It helps the racers by not costing them tons of money every off season with stupid rule changes.

Reggie, does Mich still have the allaince 11? This guys is what I was trying to do at SGMP with template cars. Low budget run with high budget with a rule package makes it all competitive. At Mansfield in 2006 we ran 15 races. Goodyear 10 inch grooved tire. Avg car count for 15 races was 26. Avg tires bought for the YEAR per TEAM was 7 tires. Thats right avg was good. Each team only bought 7 tires.
