  • Teach the Kids

I saw something cool last night at Hendry County Motorsports, and it drove home the idea that we have to pass on the craft of racing management to the next generation. Unlike the stick and ball sports, our kids don't have access to very many coaches. Can we all try to pass our racing life on to someone younger?

Here is what went on, and I loved seeing it. In the starter's stand at Hendry is life-long racer Steve Dielmann. "Hemroid", as he was known in his decades of driving, has been the chief starter for a few years now, but I don't think he touched a single flag last night. Instead, they were in the hands of a young "junior flagger" who did a good job of things. No doubt that Steve was on the radio, making the calls, and was in full control of the situation. He stood close by the teenage flagger, and let this young man gain the experience of the job.

What do you think that kid is going to talk about all week at school? Want to bet he is burning up for next Saturday night?

The next generation has to chose between iRacing and the real thing. Give a kid a chance and help them to make the right choice.
