ROGGEN ROCKS TO SSCS MOD MINI WIN AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

The Sunshine State Challenge Series Modified Mini Stocks took center stage running 30 laps on a great night in front of a good crowd that witnessed some fine racing in all classes.

Veteran Mike Lawhorn was the quickest of the Mod four-bangers in qualifying, tripping the new Sunoco Scoreboard clock at 15.096 seconds followed closely by the 15.135 lap of Tyler Simpson and Keith Roggen's 15.138 lap.

Simpson, a winner here in the first SSCS Mod Mini contest of the year in January, slipped out to the early lead. Simpson continued to head the field until a lap nine caution for Jimmy Frazier's spin in turn four. Frazier, who missed time trials while changing a head gasket, returned to action at the tail of the restart line-up. Frazier would eventually fall by the wayside on lap 12 while Robert "Boogs" Fellows saw the debut of his new ride end on the tenth lap when he lost second gear.

As the the field restarted, Roggen began to apply the pressure and eventually sped by Simpson for the point on the 11th lap. From there Roggen ran off while Lawhorn moved into the top three with a pass on Chris Spring during lap 15. The second and final caution of the event flew for Kenny Lawrence's turn three spin on lap 23. Second-running Simpson opted to stay behind Roggen for the restart allowing Lawhorn to move up to second for the restart outside of Roggen.

Lawhorn made a good run on the restart and slipped into line in front of Simpson. Meanwhile, Roggen was long gone as he raced to a comfortable victory over Lawhorn, Simpson, Spring and Kenny Nurse, Jr. Lawrence was the only other car running in sixth as Frazier, Fellows and Larry Hallam were scored seventh through ninth. Oscar Nurse and Wayne Stenstrom did not start.

Seth Adams, winner of every Legend Car feature so far this year, decided not to race himself this week but his Seth Adams Racing machine was still in victory lane at the end of the Legend 25-lap run. Adams had Kyle Pitts in the car on this night and Pitts did not disappoint as he led every lap to score an easy win by a full straight over Greg Welage, Alan Hiefnar, Mike Verhaagh and Jason Welage. The father/son duo of Jason and Greg Welage are from the Cincinnati, OH area and are down here racing until the tracks in their local area open back up.

Sixth place went to Tim Hunt followed by Gavin Sexton, Wild Willie Wilson, Cale Nolen and Blake Boyette. Pitts also won the heat race.

Bruce Cozad led the opening four circuits of the Mini Stock feature before Colt Cecil took over on lap five. Caution flew on the seventh lap for a hard tangle between Fred Martin and Danny Leet that put Leet out of action. For the restart, Cecil opted to start from the outside lane and that gave Chris Narramore, Sr. all the advantage he needed as he took over and held off the field despite two more yellow flag periods to remain unbeaten so far this season. "Rookie mistake" said Cecil after the race about his choice of line for the first restart. Cecil held on for second despite the car running hot over the final few laps.

Martin came back to grab third spot while Devin Brown was fourth in his first-ever start in the class. Cozad, John Cummins, Jr., Leet and Tony Davidson completed the finishers. Heat race honors went to Davidson.

Dustin Wilson celebrated his 16th birthday by scoring a hard-fought win in the Scramblers. Anthony Carroll led for much of the race after winning the heat but eventually settled for third place behind Wilson and Andy Travis. Keith Cantrill took fourth and William Kerns was fifth.

It had been a long time between victory lane visits but David Purvis, after changing the paint scheme and number on his car during the week, drove to the V-8 Bomber win. After replacing the rear end in his car following problems in the heat, James Wright III took the checker in second followed by his back-up car that was being driven by Danny Burchfield. Bubba Healey and Ricky Norman were fourth and fifth. Purvis also claimed the heat race win.

Chuckie Herne led all the way to score his first-ever Figure-8 win at Auburndale. He was chased to the stripe by Neil Herne, Preston Davis, Wayne Calkins, Jared Meyer and Wayne Whitehead.
