RAIN IS THE BIG WINNER SATURDAY NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY
For the better part of Saturday it was hot and sunny at Auburndale Speedway but as the sun set in the west, angry clouds began to build up eventually bringing on rain and lightning just before 8 pm as the bulk of the racing program, including the DASS Series Sportsman 50 lap race, had to be canceled.
DASS qualifying and two features were completed before the rains came. The Mini Stock feature was on track as the wet stuff started to fall and their race was called complete since it had gone past the half way point.
Seventeen Sportsman cars were in attendance and qualifying was extremely close with George Gorham, Jr. the fastest at 14.580 seconds followed closely by the 14.619 lap of Jason Vail. Junior Beckner timed in third quick at 14.744 followed by Bruce Bennett's lap of 14.762 and the 14.765 lap of Chris Lewellen. Rounding out the top ten qualifiers were Patrick Thomas (14.795), Michael Goddard, subbing for point leader Colin Allman (14.819), Devin McLeod (14.957) and Dora Thorne (14.997). Other qualifiers included Bobby Mobley (15.016), Greg Robbins (15.120), Daniel Conlin, Jr. (15.133), Jamie Kennedy (15.143), Joshua Borem (15.255), Rick Reed (15.565) and Adam Briggs (15.765).
The race has been rescheduled as a 75-lap event taking place during "Championship Weekend" on October 22 that will pay double points. Time trials will be carried over from the rained out race with all other drivers who wish to race starting from the rear of the grid.
A nice field of Legend Cars were able to complete their 25-lap feature event as Dave Gleason led the opening circuit before Donovan Ponder took charge. Ponder stayed out front through the first half of the race but could not hold back Seth Adams who took over and sped to yet another victory. The race had to be red-flagged just after the crossed flags for half way were displayed when the engine blew in the machine of Bobby Diestler who was making his first Legend Car start in one of Wild Willie Wilson's fleet of cars. Despite a flash fire, Diestler was OK although it took several minutes to clean up the track.
Adams set sail on the restart and never looked back as he took the checker ahead of Ponder and Devin McLeod. Michael Cherry also made his first Legend Car start and was impressive coming home fourth just in front of Gleason. Rounding out the finishers were L. J. Grimm, Alan Hiefnar, Mike Verhaagh, Wilson, Cale Nolen, Diestler and Tim Harris.
Russell Bush made it three straight Mini Cup victories as he slipped by early leader Clayton Samuels with just a handful of laps left. Samuels held on for second ahead of Brey Holmes, newcomers Doug Higbie and Bill Rychel and Douglas Herrin, Jr.
Chris Narramore, Sr. was declared the winner of the Mini Stock feature that made it just past half way before the rains washed out the rest of the program.
Next week is a big night at Auburndale Speedway as it will be "Monster Truck Maximum Throttle" presented by Stepp's Towing and All Star Auto Recycling. Five of the best in Monster Truck action will be taking part including Gunslinger, Jester, Bad News, Razin' Kane and Ballistic. These trucks will battle it out for top honors in four events: The Wendy’s Wheelie Contest sponsored by the Lakeland and Bartow Wendy’s locations, Racing, a Donut Contest and Freestyle.
Gates Open at 4 pm with a pre-event party on the track. Monster Truck rides will take place at 5:30 pm and the show gets under way at 7 pm.
The next Stock Car racing event will be on Saturday night October 8 and feature the DARTS Pro Trucks for 50 laps along with the Legend Cars, V-8 Bombers, Mod Minis, Mini Stocks, Scramblers and Mini Cup cars.
