SOUTHERN PRO-AM TRUCKS TACKLE SEBRING ROAD COURSE THIS WEEKEND
The Southern Pro-Am Truck Series is back in action this weekend at the 3.74 mile-long Sebring International Raceway in partnership with the Formula and Auto Racing Association/USA as part of FARA's 2016 Sebring 500 this Saturday and Sunday July 9-10. This big event will feature the Sebring 500 4-Hour endurance race, Sprint Races and, of course, two races for the Southern Pro-Am Trucks. Saturday and Sunday the event will also host the HPDE Driven to Perform Driving Academy for all street cars.
A number of Southern Pro-Am Truck teams are slated to be in action and, for some drivers, it will be their first-ever time on a road course layout. However some of the drivers in the field actually have some road racing experience racing karts but will tell you driving a full-size race truck is a whole lot different than a quick and nimble kart.
The Southern Pro-Am Truck Series has run two events so far this season and both have been won by 27-year-old Becca Monopoli of Lakeland and she hopes to continue her winning ways this weekend after a very forgettable night at Showtime Speedway in St. Pete last Sunday where the engine blew in her Super Late Model racer causing a massive pile-up that resulted in major damage to her car and several other machines.
Monopoli will be tested by a number of other drivers, though, who will all be trying to etch their name in the storied history of Sebring that dates back to New Years Eve of 1950. That first race was contested for six hours and was won by Frits Koster and Ralph Deshon who drove a Crosley Hot Shot to the win. The first 12 Hour race was held on March 15, 1952 with Larry Kulok and Harry Grey scoring the victory in a Frazer-Nash.
Along with the annual 12 Hour event, Sebring has hosted a number of other big races over the years. The second Grand Prix of the United States for Formula One cars was held at Sebring and won by Bruce McLaren in a Cooper T51 Climax. Several SCCA Trans-Am races were held at Sebring with drivers like Jochen Rindt, Jerry Titus and Mark Donohue visiting victory lane.
The list of 12 Hour race winners is a virtual who's who of motorsports over the years and includes the likes of Juan Manuel Fangio, A. J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Jacky Ickx, Peter Gregg, Hurley Haywood, Sir Stirling Moss, John Surtees, Brian Redman, Al Holbert, Hans Joachim Stuck, Geoff Brabham, Wayne Taylor, Scott Pruett, Christian Fittipaldi and so many other great icons of the sport.
As a fan, this is a very great event to see without busting your budget. In fact, you can get courtesy tickets from any Alan Jay Automotive dealership or simply by going on line to http://www.farausa.com/eticket/. Even if you don't have a courtesy ticket, entry at the gate will be just $10. You pay only for parking with your courtesy ticket; $10 for Midway parking and $20 for Paddock parking.
