It was a hot and muggy night for sure at New Smyrna Speedway.
They had good fields of cars in most classes, and good racing as well.
Late Models: Jeff Scofield dominated the race, but it was Brad May that provided the excitement, coming from the back to finish second.
At one point he was challenging for the lead, but a late race yellow realigned the field, Scofield hooked up a little better at the green and that was...that.
Sportsman: Kody Jett, after a series of evenings with "issues", brought home a win. An elated Daniel Conlin held off Patrick Thomas for fourth. Thomas could work in only a few laps of practice to dial the car in before the event, but will be back to do battle at the upcoming Clyde Hart Memorial event this coming Thursday, June 30.
The Story: Legendary Ron McCreary was back in a bomber. A B52 bomber sized bomber. Actually about a '75 full sized Buick painted approximately "plum crazy". For those not in the know, the '75 Buick is the largest Buick--in history.
At any rate, there was veteran Ron McCreary starting in the rear of a 20+ car field of mostly Saturns, with a Metric Monte Carlo or two and maybe a T-Bird thrown in. The Buick was approximately twice the size and twice the mass of the majority of the front runners.
In the 50 lap event, Ron drove the Buick powered machine through the field to the lead, passing high and low, putting the car through Saturn-sized holes. And then proceeded to hold off two Saturns trying to get by on both sides lap after lap, only to have overheating issues and an ill timed restart drop him back to third.
But post race inspection turned up a non-performance enhancing infraction (imo), and the the official hammer came down.
Still, the man can wheel a car just like he always could, and put on quite a tutorial showing the buzz bombs how to get around New Smyrna Speedway.
The Wrap Up: A great night at the track, where a good sized crowd filled the stands, endured the heat, and largely stayed for all of the exciting events.
