It was a hot and humid Central Florida night for week number 6 of Whelen All American Series racing at New Smyrna Speedway and thankfully the rain stayed away and we got all the scheduled action in. The Pro Late Models headlined the racing action along with the Modifieds, Speedway Flooring Super Stocks and Rodizio Grill Bombers!
The first feature event of the evening belonged to the Speedway Flooring Super Stocks and a good field of 10 cars would duke it out for the win. After 3 events this season we have had 3 different winners, would we see a forth? David Gould, winner last time this division ran, started on pole and led the opening few circuits. Things got interesting early on as Preston Hunt and Bobby Holley battled for 2nd. Hunt got into Holley pretty hard in turn 1 and almost spun out in turn 2, somehow Hunt was able to keep control of the car but the caution flew none the less. On the restart Jeff Cuddy in the XL machine made his move for the front and eventually took the lead from David Gould around halfway. Late in the race coming off turn 2 John Hodge lost a wheel and spun in a shower of sparks bringing out the events 2nd yellow flag. His wheel ended up bouncing down the back stretch, made its way through turns 3 and 4 and just past pit road before the track safety crew could retrieve it. It made for an entertaining few moments on track to say the least! On the restart it would be Cuddy vs. Hunt ( who made his way back through the field after the incident with Holley. Cuddy got the jump and never looked back, claiming his first checkered flag of the season and giving us 4 winners in 4 races for the Super Stocks this year!
Super Stock Top 5:
1 XL Jeff Cuddy
2 6 Preston Hunt
3 16 David Gould
4 56 Bobby Holley
5 21 Mike Dahm
Next up was the 25 lap contest for the Pro Late Models. These guys have been showing up in great numbers each week and putting on some very entertaining races! Matt Montineri started on the pole and jumped out to the early lead. It didn't take long for 3rd place starter Brad May to chase him down however. The two battled side by side for the lead for a few laps before the 24 of Dalton Smith got spun around in turn 3 bringing out the yellow. Brad may had a nose out in front on the last completed lap and was deemed the leader on the restart. When the race went back green May set sail and opened up a nice lead. Late in the race May would have a mirror full of Youngster Carter Stokes who picked up his first win a few weeks ago. Carter had to start deep in the field this week and had slowly worked his way through the field to Mays back bumper but he was unable to make a move as the laps wound down. Brad May was able to hold off Stokes to pick up his 2nd win of the season and increase his point lead. If there had been another caution late in the race it might have been a different story but I think we will be hearing Carter Stokes Vs Brad May quite a bit in the Pro Late Models this season, stay tuned...
Pro Late Model Top 5
1 9 Brad May
2 33 Carter Stokes
3 10 Matt Montineri
4 18 Zack Jarrell
5 11 Robert Strader
The Modifieds took to the track next for just the 2nd time this season. Matt Wheeler started on the pole and led briefly but there was no holding back the 66 machine of Jerry Symons. Symons started 4th but quickly got to the lead and checked out on the field. Alan Bruns who started 8th after having issues in practice was able to make his way up to 2nd but was too far away to challenge for the lead until the 3 of Greg Bruce Jr spun out to bring out the yellow. On the restart Symons reestablished the lead, with Bruns in 2nd. With under 5 laps to go it look like Symons' car started to go away and Bruns was nipping at his heals. With 2 laps to Go Bruns made contact with Symons in turn 3 and tried to jump underneath to take the lead but he was un able to capitalize. Somehow Symons held on to the lead coming to the white flag and he still had a nice advantage through turns1 and 2. Bruns had one last chance in turns 3 and 4 But Jerry Symons would not be denied! Symons would capture his 2nd checkered flag of the season with an ailing race car ahead of Bruns and Wayne Parker.
Modified Top 5:
1 66 Jerry Symons
2 4B Alan Bruns
3 1 Wayne Parker
4 96 Matt Wheeler
5 98 Matt Jarrett
Wrapping up the evenings program would be the Rodizio Grill Bombers with their 20 lap feature event. Aaron Overman started on the pole but it would be outside pole sitter Zach Curtis who took the early lead. Curtis, who was making his first start of the year, looked strong in the early going. Last week's winner Joe Hamilton would make things difficult for Curtis as the two battled for the lead around the mid way point of the race. Curtis and Hamilton both had equal race cars and were looking to settle the race amongst themselves, but Mac MacDonald blew a tire and came to a stop on the race track, bringing out the yellow. On the restart Hamilton took the lead but over drove the corner allowing Curtis to take back the lead. The two swapped the lead a few more times as they were both giving it everything they had, but when the checkered flag flew, Zach Curtis got to the line first and Hamilton would have to settle for 2nd. The Bombers once again put on an excellent show and it looks like something special is in the works for this division! Stay tuned for more details!!
Bomber Top 5:
1 1 Zack Curtis
2 10 Joe Hamilton
3 58 James Skinner
