  • New Smyrna Speedway Race Preview for 10/24/17

THREE POINT CHAMPIONS TO BE CROWNED SATURDAY NIGHT AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY

This Saturday night is Whelen Engineering night at New Smyrna Speedway as the track hosts week number 33 of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series. The Super Late Model season championship will be decided along with track titles for the Sportsman and Modified classes, plus the Bombers will be in action too.
The Super Late Models will finish up their brief point season that had been dominated by two drivers who both hail from the Seminole County city of Oviedo, Anthony Sergi and Brad May. Sergi goes into the event with just a five point edge and will be at the wheel of his MJS Concrete special that had to be rebuilt after a hard crash in the recent Marion Edwards, Jr. Memorial that was a Bright House Series point race. May has been untouchable in the recent Pro Late Model events since signing on new sponsor R. K. Edwards, Inc. of Longwood. This will be May's first Super Late Model race for his new sponsor. Lurking in the shadows is veteran driver David Rogers of Orlando who has his TM Ranch machine just nine points out of first place. Rogers still has an outside shot at taking his upteenth New Smyrna Speedway track title. Sitting fourth in points is young Noah "Little Gator" Cornman who has pretty much wrapped up the 2015 Super Late Model Rookie of the Year honors. This will be the final tune-up for the Super Late Model class here before the upcoming 50th Annual Governor's Cup race weekend November 14-15 so expect a few "heavy hitters" to be in the field getting a leg up on the competition.
Also racing will be a Sportsman cars for 50 laps in their final point race of the year. American Auto, Tires and Service of New Smyrna Beach had a bounty up on point leader Patrick Thomas of Oviedo but it went unclaimed after seceral weeks. Instead of continuing the bounty, American Auto's E. J. Wilcoxson has put up an extra $500 cash award to the winner of the race this week. That makes it a $1,500 to win race which should attract a top field of drivers to the class that has been the strongest car count-wise this season. Thomas pretty much has the 2015 Sportsman championship in the bag as he has a 42 point edge on his nearest competitor Junior Beckner. It's not yet known if Thomas will be behind the wheel of his own car or will again steer the #111 Harris Oil/Harris Mini Storage special that he drove last time out. Sandy Lee is currently third in points just ahead of teammates Ron Gustafson, Derrick Wood and R. J. Glaser who looks like he'll be Rookie of the Year for the Sportsman class this year. D. J. Farr is tenth in points, so it looks like the Jim Daley/Sandy Lee/Sheppard Racing Enterprises "Superteam" will take five of the top ten in Sportsman points this season.
One class that has a very close chase for the championship is the Modified division. Veteran New Smyrna drivers James "Tank" Tucker and Jerry "The Hammer" Symons will decide the race for the title this week as Tucker enters the night just two points ahead of Symons. Should the two arch rivals have an "off" night, Matt Wheeler is still within shouting distance, 12 markers behind Tucker.
After James Skinner's car was disqualified following last week's Bomber feature, all Aaron Overman of Orlando has to do is just start the last two races of the year to claim his first ever New Smyrna track title to go with his Rookie of the Year honors last year. Overman has a big 52 point advantage heading into Saturday night.
Pit gates open at 3 pm Saturday afternoon with practice slated from 4-6 pm. Grandstand gates open at 6 pm with the weekly pre-race party featuring food and drink specials at the Throttle to Bottle Pub along with live music courtesy of Pub 44 in New Smyrna Beach.
The Sportsman cars will qualify at 6:15 pm with racing starting at 7:30 pm beginning with a 25 lap feature for the Modifieds followed by 35 laps for the Super Late Models as two track championships will be decided before intermission. After intermission the Sportsman go at it for 50 laps and the Bombers wrap up the evening with a 20 lap contest.
Adult admission is $15 with all seniors (65+) and military with valid ID being admitted for $13. Kids 11 and under get in free.
The Hart to Heart Breast Cancer Foundation will have games and activities plus the Coke Zero bike raffle courtesy of Daytona Bevarage will wind down as the bike will be given away at the end of the evening. All money raised benefits local breast cancer victims.

The 50th running of the Governor’s Cup race for Super Late Models is now less than a month away. This year the race is being presented by Tempaco in partnership with Noritz and Rinnai and will take place Sunday, November 15th at 2 pm. Top prize this year is $15,000 to win with a Fast Qualifier Award presented by Progressive Racing Engines in the form of $500 cash. There will also be a Miller Welders Hard Charger Award of $500 in products. Also on Sunday there will be a 50-lap Sportsman feature paying 1,000 to win. Wayne Reutimann of Zephyrhills, winner of the first Governor's Cup event held 50 years ago at Golden Gate Speedway in Tampa, is expected to be in attendance along with several other former winners including a number of them who also will be attempting to qualify for this year's race.
The Governor's Cup weekend kicks off Friday, November 13th with park and practice. Saturday night, November 14th features the "Prelude to the Cup" with a full slate of racing. The PPG Pro Late Model 100 presented by Tower Sealants will pay $2,500 to win. Modifieds are also in action Saturday with a 75 lap, $7,500 to win race sponsored by Heat Treating Incorporated (HTI). Also in action Saturday night will be the Speedway Flooring Super Stocks, the Sunshine Seamless Gutters Mini Stocks, and Bombers.
