MANHEIM NIGHT AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY FEATURES 50-LAP SUPER STOCK AND TWIN
SPORTSMAN RACES
After week number 27 of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series fell
victim to inclement weather yet again last week, track officials are hoping
for better weather this week for week number 28 and will do everything in
their power to insure fans get to see some racing this weekend by scheduling a
Sunday, September 20th, rain date should Mother Nature be uncooperative on
Saturday night.
It will be Manheim of Orlando night at the track as the Speedway Flooring
Super Stocks will go all-out in the Manheim 50. The Manheim Orlando auto
auction, a division of Cox Enterprises, is located just west of Greater
Orlando near the city of Ocoee and is the second-largest auto auction in the
world. Manheim Orlando General Manager Butch Herdegen has raced for several
years in the Super Stocks at New Smyrna and is the only driver so far this
year to beat point leader Justin Reynolds who has scored victories in nine of
ten races this season and is the runaway point leader. Herdegen has also put
up $200 of his own money as a fast qualifier award for the race. Of course he
hopes he'll set fast time so he can keep his cash in his wallet but,
regardless, is hoping for a great turnout of Super Stocks this week.
The Sportsman were slated to run a pair of 25-lap contests last week but fell
victim to the rain. Track officials immediately decided to add both of the
NASCAR Division III points-paying races to this week's schedule in order to
allow track Sportsman point leader Patrick Thomas to get two extra races he
needs in his quest for a possible Division III point championship. Right now,
Thomas has 13 races and, since the the NASCAR points are adjusted at the end
of the season to allow for each driver to use their best 14 races for their
season total, Thomas really needs to get these two races run as the conclusion
of the NASCAR point season is this Sunday, September 20th, hence the reason
for the Sunday rain date. "We're doing the Sunday rain date for Patrick
(Thomas), make no mistake," says track General Manager Kim Brown. However she
added, "We also want to get another show in for all of our drivers in these
divisions because of the excessive number of rain outs recently."
Again, Thomas has 13 starts this year and has won nine of those. He has
finished second once, third one time and fourth once. His only DNF produced a
17th place finish on a wild opening night that saw several cars receive damage
in a wild front stretch crash, including Thomas' machine. Currently, Thomas
is seventh in NASCAR Division III points, 41 behind leader Brent Kane whose
season is over at the Elko (MN) Speedway after he won eight of 20 starts. The
twin races this week will allow Thomas to drop that race in which he DNF's and
add another race with (hopefully) a better result that could gain him the
championship and certainly a top-five effort. Not a bad run for the Oviedo
driver as over 200 drivers have earned Division III points this year.
Thomas not only has the points to deal with but also the bounty is still on
his head if anyone can beat him to the checker (as long as he is still running
at the finish). The bounty, offered up by American Auto, Tires & Service of
New Smyrna Beach now stands at $600 and will be attracting not only the local
New Smyrna Speedway regulars but Sportsman teams from across the State of
Florida as long as the weather cooperates.
Also in action will be the Pro Late Models, Sunshine Seamless Gutters Mini
Stocks and the Bombers as six feature races are slated to take place. Again,
should the weather take a turn for the worse, racing will take place on Sunday
beginning at 2 pm with grandstand gates opening at noon.
Pit gates open at 3 pm Saturday afternoon with practice slated from 4-6 pm.
Grandstand gates open at 6 pm with the usual pre-race party from 6-7:15 pm at
the Throttle to Bottle Pub featuring live music courtesy of Pub 44 of New
Smyrna Beach along with food and drink specials. Racing begins at 7:30 pm and
will be a features-only format.
The Sportsman open up the racing action with their first 25-lap feature
followed by a 25 lap contest for the Sunshine Seamless Gutters Mini Stocks and
a 25 lap event for the Pro Late Models. Following intermission the Speedway
Flooring Super Stocks go for the Manheim 50 then it's 25-lap race number two
for the Sportsman cars followed by a 20 lap Bomber feature to cap off the
evening.
Adult admission is $15 with all seniors (65+) and military with valid ID being
admitted for $13. Kids 11 and under are free of charge and can enjoy a bounce
house that will be on the grounds all evening courtesy of Central Florida
Raceway Ministries.
