You all know I'm a history and race statistics buff and I noticed that this week at Darlington was just the fifth win ever for car #19 in Cup racing...
Carl Edwards' win was the 2nd win for Edwards in the car #19. Edwards won the Coca-Cola 600 in May at Charlotte for the #19's 4th overall win. The #19 had only three other race wins in the history of the Sprint Cup Series that began in 1949. John Rostek won at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix in 1960. Jeremy Mayfield won twice in the #19 Dodge; in 2004 at Richmond and 2005 in Michigan.
The #19 has not been one of the most successful numbers in Cup history because most of the drivers using it were low-buck "independents" or drivers running sort of second-rate equipment. Henley Gray has the most starts in the #19 with 231 between 1967-1977 followed by Herman "Turtle" Beam with 194. Mayfield had 165 starts driving Ray Evernham's Dodges and Elliott Sadler is fourth with 158 starts also driving for Evernham, then Richard Petty Motorsports. J.T. Putney is fifth with 71 followed by Chad Little (50) Dick May (47) Loy Allen, Jr. (37) and Cale Yarborough who ran 33 races for car owner Beam in the mid-60s before getting his first factory rides with Banjo Matthews and the Wood Brothers...
