FIVE DIVISION RACE PROGRAM AND CLASSIC CAR SHOW SET FOR SATURDAY NIGHT AT NEW
SMYRNA SPEEDWAY
If Mother Nature cooperates this week, New Smyrna Speedway will host a big
race program for week number 26 of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
featuring five classes plus a Classic Car Show. August was not a good month
for the track weather-wise as most areas around Central Florida, including New
Smyrna Speedway, received at or around 15 inches of rain, an amount equivalent
to one-fourth of the amount of precipitation that normally falls in a calendar
year!
This week the Pro Late Models will try and get a race in for the first time
since June 27th when Daniel Keene, Jr. came home victorious. The Sunshine
Seamless Gutters Mini Stocks will try, once again, to run their first 50-lap
contest of the year as all other attempts have fell victim to bad weather.
Also on the card will be the Speedway Flooring Super Stocks, Bombers and the
Sportsman cars which have been added as a special attraction this week. A
Classic Car Show will take place from 5-7 pm. Entry is $5 per car and it gets
you 5 laps around the speedway plus two adult admission tickets to the races.
Any classic car, truck, hot rod or muscle car is eligible to take part and
have fun.
Pit gates open Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm with open practice slated from
4:30-6 pm. Grandstand gates open officially at 6 pm, however Classic Car Show
participants can bring their vehicles in at 5 pm to be displayed in the main
walkway area between the Throttle to Bottle Pub and turn four gate. As always
there will be a pre-race party featuring drink and food specials plus music
this week by DJ Frank Roberts.
Mini Stock qualifying is slated for 6:15 pm and racing will begin at 7:30 pm
and be an all-feature format starting with 25 laps for the Speedway Flooring
Super Stocks followed by a 25-lap contest for the Sportsman cars. Following
intermission, the Sunshine Seamless Gutters Mini Stocks will run their 50-lap
event followed by 25 laps for the Pro Late Models. The Bombers wrap up the
evening with their 20-lap feature.
Adult admission is just $15 with all seniors (65+) and military with valid ID
being admitted for $13. Kids aged 11 and under get in absolutely free of
charge. All rain checks and arm bands from last week's rain-shortened event
WILL BE HONORED!
Other news:
After several days, Justin Reynolds' victory in the Speedway Flooring Super
Stock feature on August 22nd was upheld after his engine's camshaft was
checked and cleared by Crane Cams of Daytona Beach. Reynolds has been
thrashing to get his power plant back together but will be in action along
with his teammates Matt Reynolds and Zachary Curtis this week. Reynolds now
leads the Super Stock point race by 38 markers over Bobby Holley with Shannon
Kelly third just six points behind Holley. The official order of finish for
the 8/22 feature saw Reynolds as the winner with Butch Herdegen second, George
Spears third, Zachary Curtis fourth and fifth going to Shannon Kelly who ran
most of the race with no brakes. Rounding out the top ten were Bobby Holley,
Jarrett Korpi, Dale Howard, Ernie Tuminello and Thomas Koch. Completing the
finishing field of 20 starters were Joe Gerard, Mike Dahm, Gino Tuminello,
Jeff Cuddy, Matt Reynolds, Ronnie Hadden, Eric Kottwitz, George Dahm and J. T.
Tippins. Preston Hunt was the only one of four cars to undergo the rigorous
tech inspection that was disqualified as his transmission was deemed not to
meet the current rules.
The Sportsman cars were added to this week's schedule in order to allow for
another race for eligibility for NASCAR Division III points. Current
Sportsman point leader and eight-time feature winner Patrick Thomas sits in
22nd position in the division III standings however he has run only 12 races
while all of the drivers in front of him have run more events, some twice as
many. Although Thomas is in 22nd place, he is just 36 points out of tenth.
With this week's race, double features next week and races on September 26th
and October 24th (50 laps), Thomas can get five more races under his belt
while many of his competitor's tracks will be closing for the season. After
points are adjusted at the conclusion of the NASCAR season, Thomas should
easily finish well up in the top ten and has an outside shot at becoming
champion too.
Open practice is slated for this Thursday evening. Practice is open to any
class of car and the pit gate will open at 5 pm with practice running from
6-10 pm. Admission (pit gate only) is $10 per person.
New Smyrna Speedway is expanding the concession stand staff and is looking for

class. Speedway Flooring is located at 2841 South Nova Road in Daytona Beach

and services, plus the largest selection of first quality products, lowest
prices and superior service as well. Speedway Flooring can be contacted at
(386) 248-2882. Call them and thank them for becoming part of the growing New
Smyrna Speedway family of supporters and sponsors.
Greg Bruce, Jr., who has scored four Bomber wins this year, has parked his
potent Saturn in order to concentrate on finishing up his new Modified car
that he hopes to have ready by season's end. Coy Riddle, son of the late Don
Crites who ran several classes at New Smyrna over the years, also has a new
Modified racer that is nearing completion.
Former New Smyrna Speedway driver and track champion Frank Wood of Orlando
made a rare appearance at the track last week to watch his grandson Derrick
Wood race in the Sportsman class. Frank ran Late Models and in the old
Thunder Car class at New Smyrna after getting his racing start in South
Florida before moving to Orlando and competing at the old Orlando Raceway and
Eau Gallie Speedway before New Smyrna opened up in 1967. Derrick's night
started out OK as he began the feature race from the pole and led the first
four laps before his car went sour and he fell out of the event.
You needed a scorecard to figure out what was going on with the Jim
Daley/Sheppard Racing Enterprises "superteam" last week. The team had seven
Sportsman cars on hand including a new machine recently purchased from Roger
Blevins that was qualified by veteran Super Stock driver Danny Frye. The
aforementioned Derrick Wood was in good shape with his #1 car until it
suffered problems on lap five of the feature. Matt Jarrett's #20 ran afoul of
problems in hot laps and he never made it out for qualifying. Ron Gustafson's
#38 also had trouble in practice and the car could not be repaired in time for
the feature so he switched to Frye's #51 to keep himself in the point race
where he currently stands fourth. Rookie of the Year contender R. J. Glaser's
#5 was back at the shop in Deland with engine problems so he competed in the
#0 normally driven by D. J. Farr while Farr drove Sandy Lee's back-up car #77.
Lee was in his regular #10 car and he had the best finish for the team in the
rain-shortened race in eighth while Farr took tenth and Gustafson was 13th.
