FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT THIS WEEK AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY - BIG SPORTSMAN FIELD
EXPECTED TO GO AFTER THOMAS BOUNTY
Week number 25 of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series at New Smyrna
Speedway is looking like it will be one of the biggest race nights of the year
and it will take place on "Fan Appreciation Night" where all adult grandstand
tickets will be just $10. The Sportsman cars will duke it out for 50 laps in
what is expected to be one of the top events at the track this season. The
Sportsman cars will be joined by the Modifieds and Bombers plus the fans can
get involved by racing their street legal machines in Spectator Racing at
intermission.
As many as 30 Sportsman racers will be on hand to try and snare the $1,000 top
prize plus have a shot at the $500 bounty placed on point leader Patrick
Thomas by American Auto, Tires & Service of New Smyrna Beach. Thomas has won
four Sportsman features in a row and eight of the last nine. If anyone can
beat Thomas to the checker this week (Thomas must still be running at the
finish) they'll take home the $500 bonus. Plus Jacalone & Sons Auto Service
of St. Augustine has added a $100 bonus to the second place finisher in the
50-lap contest.
Thomas will have plenty of challengers just from the regular New Smyrna
contingent along with a few out-of-town "invaders." Junior Beckner has been
the one driver to really mount a challenge to Thomas during the season so far
and is one of only three drivers other than Thomas to visit Hampton Inn
victory lane, the other two being George Gorham, Jr. and Michael Seay who
picked up a surprise win on opening night as a fill-in driver. Beckner,
currently second in points, is going all out to claim the big money this
week.
New Hampshire's Sandy Lee is currently third in points and will lead a bevy of
cars that he co-owns with partner Jim Daley that are housed at the Sheppard
Racing Enterprises shop in Deland. That team will have no fewer than
seven-eight cars entered for the likes of Lee, Derrick Wood, Ron Gustafson,
Rookie of the Year Contender R. J. Glaser, D. J. Farr and Matt Jarrett... plus
they may have a couple of other surprises behind the wheel as well.
Other top contenders include John Emerson in his wild-looking Bucked-Up
Apparel Special, Scott Bramlett, Rusty Ebersole, Daniel Conlin, Jr., Timmy
Todd, Jr., Brandon Christian, Mike Pletka, Garrett Hill, Austin Howell,
Richard Goodrich, Michael Held, George Alexander, Austin Carr, Warren Howie
and many others.
The "traveling" group will be led by the always fast Aaron Williamson of
Mulberry in his popular "Frozen" themed ride, Roger Blevins of Eagle Lake and
Scott "Sudsman" Garrity of Port Richey, who expects to make his first start of
the year here in this event. All are expected along with a few other
surprises. Unfortunately one driver who will not be in attendance is Sean
Bass in his potent AMF Chassis ride as he will be on vacation this week.
Even more interesting is that at least two brand new machines (and possibly a
few more) are being unveiled for this event. Lake Mary's Todd Allen will be
debuting a brand new Pletcher chassis and his crew chief will be none other
than Jason Boyd.
Last week, Jerry "The Hammer" Symons got back on track by winning his first
Modified feature since early April. Symons will go for two in a row this week
but should have his regular group of challengers including James "Tank"
Tucker, who remains second in points, now six markers behind his arch rival.
Meanwhile, James Skinner continues to lead the Bomber points but only by five
ahead of a fast-closing Aaron Overman.
Spectator Racing will take place during intermission as is open to anyone of
legal driving age with a street legal car, truck or van (no convertibles or
motorcycles are allowed). You must have, or borrow, a helmet to compete and
there is a crisp $100 bill that goes to the winner of each event.
Pit gates open Saturday afternoon at 4 pm with open practice from 5-6 pm.
Grandstand gates open at 6 pm and there will be the usual pre-race party at
the Throttle to Bottle Pub featuring live music courtesy of Pub 44 in New
Smyrna, $1 beers and half-off bar food menu.
Sportsman qualifying will take place at 6:15 pm with the first race taking to
the speedway at 7:30 pm. Racing action will begin with 8-lap heat races for
the Modifieds and the Bombers and that will be followed by the big 50-lap run
for the Sportsman cars. Intermission will follow and include the Spectator
Races, then the evening concludes with a 25-lap contest for the Modifieds and
20 laps of racing for the Bombers.
Again, as part of "Fan Appreciation Night," all adult grandstand tickets are
just $10 and, as always, all kids aged 11 and under are admitted free of
charge.
Other notes:
The next open practice at New Smyrna Speedway is now slated for Thursday
evening, September 3rd. Any class of car is invited to get in some practice
time on the high banks that night.
Results for last week's 50-lap Super Stock race have yet to be finalized as of
the time of this press release (Thursday, 8/27). The camshaft of Justin
Reynolds' #20 car is still being checked by Crane Cams of Daytona Beach and no
ruling has been made yet although Reynolds says he expects it to pass without
a problem.
EXTRA!!! Reynolds' car has been found legal and he is the winner of the race followed by Butch Herdegen and George Spears. Full results can be found at the New Smyrna Speedway web site.
