NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY RAINED OUT AGAIN - TWIN 50 LAP RACES SLATED FOR THIS WEEK
A nice field of cars had assembled this past Saturday night at New Smyrna
Speedway for week 23 of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series but Mother
Nature intervened yet again just after practice laps were completed and the
track suffered its fourth cancellation in the last five weeks. The best field
of Pro Late Models this season had signed in as had a nice field of Super
Stocks, but persistent rain showers caused track officials to call everything
off just before 8 pm.
Undaunted, New Smyrna Speedway will "give it another shot" this week for the
24th scheduled night of NASCAR Home Track racing at the storied high-banked
half-mile with a pair of featured 50-lap events taking place for the Modifieds
and the Super Stocks. The Bomber cars will also be in action. During
intermission the kids will take over the track for a series of bicycle races.
All kids through age 16 are eligible to compete and they will be divided up
into races by age group. So kids, bring your bikes and have some fun! Just
remember you must have a bike helmet in order to race.
It's also "Ladies Night" at New Smyrna Speedway with all ladies being admitted
to the grandstand for just $5.
A spate of hard luck for Modified point leader Jerry "The Hammer" Symons has
allowed fellow New Smyrna Beach drivers James "Tank" Tucker and Matt Wheeler
to close to within four points of the top spot in the class (514-510).
Orlando's Matt Jarrett is in fourth place in Modified points, 22 markers out
of first. All four will be in the field for this week's 50-lap showdown and
they'll have plenty of company from the likes of Robert Deal, Shain Held,
Wayne Parker, Alan Bruns, Matthew Green, Talon Craft and a host of other
expected entries.
Justin Reynolds now has a rather big 38 point edge on Bobby Holley in the
Super Stock point race with defending champion Shannon Kelly 44 points behind
Reynolds in third. Point leader Reynolds and his Hot Colors Powder Coating
team will have three cars in the field this week for Justin, his brother Matt
and for Zachary Curtis. The Sanford Auto Dealers Exchange (SADE)/Sunbelt
Rentals team is also expected to field three cars for brothers Ernie & Gino
Tuminallo along with young up-and-coming star Preston Hunt. Butch Herdegen,
the only driver to defeat Reynolds in competition this year, is ready to go in
his Manheim Orlando Auto Auction "Tribute to the King" Special as is Dale
Howard who has been showing more speed in his new machine while having moved
to fourth in points. Jeff Cuddy is expected to debut a new car, the "XL"
machine while Eric Kottwitz will return to action after blowing an engine
earlier this season. Others expected in the field include J. T. Tippins, Jeff
Colburn, Mike Dahm, Ronnie Hadden (in a new car), Becca Samsoe, Joe Gerard and
George Spears who has a very fast new car that looks like it may provide a
challenge to the likes of Reynolds, Herdegen and Kelly.
James Skinner has a seven point advantage in the Bomber standings over Aaron
Overman while Shane Sutorus is third in the standings but is some 70 points
out of first.
The pit gate will open Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm with practice slated from
4:30-5:45 pm. Grandstand gates open at 6 pm with all fans invited to come out
early for the weekly pre-race party featuring live music at the Throttle to
Bottle Pub courtesy of Pub 44 in New Smyrna along with $1.00 beers and
half-off the bar food menu.
Modified and Super Stock time trials are slated for 6:05 pm with racing
getting under way at 7:30 pm. First up will be an 8-lap heat race for the
Bombers followed by the 50-lap event for the Modifieds. Intermission will
follow and the kids bike races will take place during intermission. After
intermission the Super Stocks are up first for 50 laps of feature racing
followed by the Bombers who will wrap up the evening with a 20 lap contest.
Adult admission is $15 with all seniors (65+) and military with valid ID being
admitted for $13, however remember it's ladies night and all ladies will get
in the main grandstands for just $5. As always, all kids aged 11 and under
are admitted free.
Other Notes:
Starting this Saturday, the Hart to Heart Breast Cancer Foundation will be
selling raffle to tickets for a Coke Zero bicycle paired with 2 tickets to the
50th Annual Governor's Cup 200 on Sunday, November 15, at New Smyrna Speedway.
We will also have 2 other sets of tickets up for grabs for the Governor's Cup
as raffle prizes too. All raffle tickets are $5 each and 100 percent of the
proceeds go directly towards helping those fighting against breast cancer in
the New Smyrna Beach area. The drawing itself will be held on Saturday,
October 24, during intermission and you must be present to win. We continue
thank all race fans at New Smyrna Speedway for your continuous donations to
the Hart to Heart Breast Cancer Foundation.
The 50-lap race for the Sunshine Seamless Gutters Mini Stocks scheduled for
last week will not be made up, that according to track officials who were
disappointed that only seven cars showed up to race although the bad weather
just about everywhere all afternoon throughout Central Florida probably kept
some teams from traveling to the track. So far, the class has had three
50-lap races scheduled and the show has been rained out each time. The Mini
Stocks have two more 50-lap event on the schedule, slated for September 5 and
October 17.
A number of new Sportsman cars are being finished up and should be in action
soon. Todd Allen of Lake Mary is finishing up his new car that looks like
something out of Star Wars and he expects to have it out for the 50-lap
Sportsman race on August 29th. Super Stock standout Butch Herdegen and his
crew chief Mike Trocki are finishing up their new Sportsman machine and hope
to have it race-ready by October. The New Hampshire Jim Daley/Sandy Lee team
based out of Sheppard Racing Enterprises in Deland may have as many as eight
cars entered in the August 29 race.
