MAY SCORES AGAIN IN SUPER LATES - HALF-DOZEN WINS NOW FOR VULPIUS & REYNOLDS
AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY
Mother Nature did her best to derail week number 15 of the NASCAR Whelen
All-American Racing Series at New Smyrna Speedway but the skies cleared over
the race track and a full night of racing was presented to a very nice crowd
on "Dad's Night Out" as all dads received free grandstand admission in honor
of Father's Day. Sponsor for the evening was the Florida Firm of Colling,
Gilbert, Wright & Carter.
The weather was not good both south and west of the track and may have
contributed to a number of teams staying home for the night as some of the
storms were downright nasty. Although only six Super Late Model teams
presented themselves for competition, the race proved to be fast and furious.
The field also included Cal Whatmore, a 30 year old sports car racer from
Queensland, Australia who was making his first stock car start in a car
normally driven by Tim Sozio. Cal and his father Mal Whatmore befriended the
Sozio team while they were at New Smyrna Speedway in 2013 on "holiday" as they
say and eventually a deal was struck for the Aussie to drive Sozio's red #16
this particular night. Whatmore's first taste of driving a stock car came
during 95 laps of practice on Thursday night although he admitted he'd been
around the high-banked half-mile before using the I-Racing simulator.
Noah Cornman and Brad May made up row one for the start and May pushed his
Bobby Sears Racing special to the front at the drop of the green. Cornman
spun on his own in turn four to bring out the yellow flag on lap six. The
young driver then made a couple of pit stops to get adjustments and returned
to the fray.
May continued to lead easily as David Rogers moved up into second trailed by
two-time winner Anthony Sergi who had also pitted for adjustments during the
lap six caution. The yellow was out again on lap 20 as the engine let go in
Scott Bertram's car, ending his night. Sergi again pitted and returned to
action.
May led the final five circuits and easily picked up his second Super Late
Model win of the year to go along with four Pro Late Model victories. His win
on this night moved him closer to point leader Sergi as May is only two points
out of first after Saturday night. Rogers finished second, holding off Sergi
at the line. Cornman bounced back to finish fourth ahead of Whatmore and
Bertram.
Bobby Holley led the opening lap of the Super Stock main event only to be
passed by heat winner Zachary Curtis. Curtis held the point until a lap four
caution for a spinning J. T. Tippins in turn four. Justin Reynolds snared the
point on the restart but saw the yellow wave a second time on lap six as the
right front wheel broke on Mike Dahm's machine on the front stretch. Dahm
kept his car off the wall but needed a tow back to the pits as he was done for
the evening.
The remainder of the race ran under green and Reynolds was again the class of
the field as he drove his Hot Colors Powder Coating Chevy to his sixth win in
seven races this year. Preston Hunt drove to a solid second place finish but
was set down in tech after his car came in underweight. That moved Shannon
Kelly up to second in the final rundown followed by Curtis in the team car to
Reynolds' racer. Dale Howard seems to finally be getting the "bugs" worked
out of his new ride as he scored a strong fourth place ahead of Holley.
Rounding out the finishers were Tippins, Ronnie Hadden, Mike Dahm, George Dahm
and Hunt.
Ted "Mr. Mini Stock" Vulpius also grabbed his sixth win of the year in seven
starts as he again dominated action in the Sunshine Seamless Gutters Mini
Stock division. After winning the heat, Vulpius allowed David Russell to lead
the opening circuit before taking over the point, never to be headed. Only a
lap 12 altercation between Mark Broat and Bobby Dooley slowed Vulpius' trip to
Hampton Inn victory lane.
Russell had his best run of the year in taking the runner-up spot trailed by
Brad Blanton, Broat, Megan Matheny and Dooley. Matheny made her first start
in the class after several years racing in the Bombers driving the same car
Pat Wells used to win the Mini Stock point championship here last year.
After taking a week off from the racing wars at New Smyrna, Billy Barrington
was back to his winning ways in the Bomber feature that ran all the way under
green. After winning the heat race, Barrington and his Chevy Cavalier broke
away from a good battle between himself, the similar Cavalier of teammate
Richard Roark and the Saturn of Greg Bruce. Roark eventually drew the ire of
flagman Ralph Miller for "aggressive" driving and he was black-flagged after a
couple of run-ins with Bruce and Shane Sutorus. Roark was behind the wheel of
a new car that was much faster than his old one and admitted he got "a little
caught up in the moment" of finally being competitive.
Barrington took home his fifth win of the season in his B & J Auto
Repair/White Sign Company-sponsored car ahead of a hard-charging Bruce.
Sutorus held on for third in front of point leader James Skinner, Dustin
Higdon, Aaron Overman and Roark.
This coming Saturday night will be week 16 of competition in the NASCAR Whelen
All-American Racing Series and will feature the always exciting Sportsman
division along with the Pro Late Models, Modifieds and the Bombers.
Patrick Thomas of Oviedo continues to lead the Sportsman points. Thomas has
won five of the eight Sportsman races this year and leads Junior Beckner by 36
markers going into this week's action. New Hampshire's Sandy Lee, who flies
down from his hometown of Lee to race as part of the potent Jim Daley/Sheppard
Racing Enterprises team, is third in points, 43 behind Thomas while defending
track champion Donny Williams and Ron Gustafson currently round out the top
five in Sportsman points.
Jerry "The Hammer" Symons of New Smyrna Beach remains on top of the Modified
standings as he tries to claim yet another track title in his Gene Kelly-owned
#66. Symons has a 16 point advantage over steady Matt Wheeler and is 24
markers ahead of third place Matthew Green. The hottest driver currently in
the Modified class is Tank Tucker who has won three of the last four features.
Tucker has moved to fourth in points (tied with Matt Jarrett), some 29 behind
leader Symons.
New Smyrna's Zach Jarrell has taken over the point lead in the Pro Late Model
class by 10 points over Blaise Hetznecker while Noah Cornman is just one point
out of second. Former point leader Rich Clouser missed the last race as he
and his family were on vacation and he's fallen to fourth in the standings, 41
behind leader Jarrell.
James Skinner of Melbourne is on top of the Bomber points by just 10 markers
over Aaron Overman with Shane Sutorus third, 30 behind Skinner.+
Pit gates open Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm with open practice from 5-6:30
pm. Grandstand gates open a 6 pm with all fans invited to come out early for
the weekly pre-race party featuring live music at the Throttle to Bottle Pub
courtesy of Pub 44 in New Smyrna along with $1.00 beers and half-off bar food
menu.
Racing begins at 7:30 pm with 8-lap heat races for the Modifieds, Sportsman
and Bombers. After intermission the Modifieds will run their 25-lap feature
followed by 25 laps for the Sportsman cars and Pro Late Models while the
evening wraps up with a 20-lap contest for the Bombers.
Adult admission is $15 with all seniors (65+) and military with valid ID
admitted for $13. As always, all kids aged 11 and under are free.
A bounty has reported to be in the offing this week for someone who can defeat
one of the top drivers at New Smyrna Speedway. Could that driver be Sportsman
hot-shoe Patrick Thomas?
Fans are being asked what you think New Smyrna Speedway should name their new
"shark" mascot. A winner will be selected on July 3rd and that person will
receive season tickets for the remainder of this year's action at New Smyrna
Speedway. You can file your entry at the speedway or can file it on line by
going to the New Smyrna Speedway Facebook page.
