REYNOLDS AND KEENE TOP 50 LAP RACES ON S.A.D.E. NIGHT AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY
Sanford Auto Dealers Exchange night at New Smyrna Speedway turned out to be a
great one with picture-perfect weather for a big crowd that was entertained by
a pair of 50-lap events for the Super Stocks and the Pro Late Models who were
making up a race rained out in September.
Seventeen Super Stocks took time with Orlando's Garrett Hill the fastest with
a lap of 20.932 seconds. Butch Herdegen was second quick at 21.349 and Justin
Reynolds third fastest with a 21.426 second lap. Hill drew an eight pill
inverting the first four rows for the start of the big race.
J. T. Tippins had the pole for the start but it was outside front row starter
David Gould who jumped to the early lead. Gould led the first six circuits
before Reynolds breezed past. The first caution of the race flew on lap 11 as
Joe Gerard slowed to a stop at the bottom of turn two. On the restart it was
Danny Frye getting by Reynolds but Reynolds was again out front a lap later
and he set the pace until the yellow flag came out a second time for a turn
two tangle between Gould and Tippins.
Frye again took advantage on the restart and led a lap again before Reynolds
took the point for the final time. The remainder of the race ran under green
flag conditions as Hill took third on lap 33, then chased down Frye to take
second place but had nothing for Reynolds at the end.
For Reynolds it was his fifth win of the year and also the fifth consecutive
50-lap Super Stock race he has won dating back two years.
Hill took second with Frye holding on to third over point leader Shannon Kelly
and Herdegen. Sixth through tenth were the winner's younger brother Matt
Reynolds, Preston Hunt, Ernie Tuminello, Mike Amato and Gino Tuminello.
Rounding out the finishers were Mike Dahm, Robert Pence, Becca Samsoe, Gerard,
Tippins, Gould and Russell Perdue.
Seventeen Pro Late Models were in the pits but two were eliminated in practice
as Michael Pena's machine had engine trouble and Tommy Mackey hit the front
stretch wall a ton in the final warm-up session putting him on the trailer for
the night. Fast time went to Rich Clouser's S.A.D.E/Sears Racing entry with a
lap of 18.009 seconds just topping point leader Will Carroll's lap of 18.067
and third quick Daniel Keene, Jr. who tripped the clocks at 18.114.
Clouser drew a six for the inversion placing Anthony Cataldi on the pole and
Oklahoma youngster Tyler Thomas on the outside pole. The initial start nearly
became a disaster when pole sitter Cataldi's car failed to fire scattering the
field behind him. Colby Clements, Alan Bruns and Ricky Anderson all had some
damage to their cars and needed to make pit stops before continuing.
Thomas grabbed the lead as the second start was much cleaner only to see the
caution wave on lap three as Anderson spun in turn one. Only a lap could be
made before Anderson again looped his ill-handling mount in turn four this
time.
On the restart it was Keene powering to the front and he began pulling away
from the field. The third, and final caution of the race came out on the 11th
lap when Carroll spun while battling Michael Atwell hard for position. From
that point the rest of the race ran under green as Keene led the rest of the
way with ease to score his second 50-lap PLM win of the season.
Thomas finished second about a half straight behind the winner while Cataldi
had one of his best runs of the year taking third. Clouser never seemed to
really get on track and he settled for fourth spot just ahead of Carroll who
made a great run back through the field after his spin and may have had the
fastest car on the track only to run out of laps. Zach Jarrell had a steady
run for sixth in front of Michael Williams, Michael Lira, Atwell and Brandon
Morris who was making his first-ever start in a Pro Late. Completing the
finishers were Anderson, Noah Cornman, Clements, Bruns and John Kennedy.
Polk City's Austin Carr scored his first win of the year in the Sportsman
feature leading all 25 laps as the race ran the whole way under green flag
conditions. Carr became the ninth different driver to win a Sportsman feature
this year in the 14 races that have been run so far.
Rusty Ebersole stayed fairly close to Carr but could never make a challenge or
get a needed caution flag and settled for the runner-up spot with Daniel
Conlin, Jr. just happy to get a solid third place finish after having a host
of mechanical issues lately. Fourth went to Junior Beckner and fifth to point
leader Donny Williams. Phillip Bessette took sixth trailed by Jason Foster,
Ron Gustafson, George Alexander, D. J. Farr, Mike Soukup and Spank Carr
(Austin's father).
The Mini Stock feature also ran green to checker with Tyler Simpson taking the
lead from Brad Blanton on the seventh lap and leading the remaining distance
for his sixth win of the year. Point leader Pat Wells made a late charge to
take second over Blanton, David Russell and Mark Broat.
Zachary Curtis has now won nine of the last ten Strictly Stock features in his
Saturn. Curtis had no problem taking an easy win this week over Charles King,
Sr., Shane Sturous, Jimmy Barron and Aaron Overman.
Next Saturday night it's Daytona Dodge Family Night featuring Spectator Races,
trick-or-treating and a costume contest for the kids and 50-lap races for the
Open Modifieds and Mini Stocks.
