GOOD FIELD SHAPING UP FOR EDWARDS MEMORIAL BRIGHTHOUSE CHALLENGE RACE AT NEW
SMYRNA SPEEDWAY
The annual Marion Edwards, Jr. Memorial race is set for this Saturday night at
New Smyrna Speedway as part of the year-long Brighthouse Challenge Series for
Super Late Models. The race honors South Florida racer Marion Edwards, Jr.
who lost his life in a crash at New Smyrna Speedway in 1969. The memorial
race was held for many years at Edwards' home track, the now defunct Hialeah
Speedway, and was brought back as an annual event here a few years ago. This
event is being presented by The Florida Firm of Colling, Gilbert, Wright and
Carter.
Along with the Super Late Models, other NASCAR Whelan All-American Series
classes in action will be the Sportsman cars, E-Modifieds, Mini Stocks and the
Strictly Stocks. Last week's Open Modified 50-lap event that was rained out
has been rescheduled for October 25th.
A nice field of cars is shaping up for the Edwards Memorial, which will go for
a distance of 100 laps. In fact the top nine drivers in Brighthouse Series
points have indicated they'll be in action. Riverview driver Joe Boyd, winner
of the season-opening Brighthouse "Icebreaker 100" at Desoto Speedway in
February, currently leads the point standings by 16 markers over Bradenton's
Jesse Dutilly. Local standout Rich Clouser of Deland is third in points and
has been a hot driver in the Pro Late Models at New Smyrna with four wins so
far this year. Clouser is 22 points behind Boyd.
Just one point separates the drivers in fourth through sixth in the standings;
"No Brake" Jake Perkins of Ocala, Lakeland's George Gorham, Jr. and Anthony
Sergi of Geneva. Michael Atwell is seventh in points ahead of four-time
Brighthouse Series champion David Rogers of Orlando and Brooksville's Daniel
Webster.
Stephen Nasse of Pinellas Park, winner of the Brighthouse race at New Smyrna
in April has entered along with T. J. Duke who scored a Brighthouse win at
Desoto Speedway in May and two-time Brightouse Series champion Tim Russell of
Longwood.
Other Drivers expected include Jeff Scofield, Billy Mowery, David Green,
Daniel Keene, Jr., Brandon Booth, Ray Black, Jr., Michael Lira and Harold
Crooms. One of the hottest drivers at New Smyrna over the past two years,
Travis Cope, won't be in the line-up this week as he has a commitment to run a
race in Virginia. Cope does indicate he will be in the field for the upcoming
Governor's Cup race in November though.
Donny Williams of Tangerine continues to lead the Sportsman point standings by
a good margin as he seeks his third win of the year while Pat Wells stays atop
a good battle in the Mini Stock class on the strength of four victories so far
this season. Jarrett Korpi, a nine-time winner this year, leads the
E-Modified standings by 23 over "Diamond" Jim Higginbotham who has taken over
second place in the points. Higginbotham says he plans to race Saturday night
despite having surgery earlier in the week.
Old School Racing is putting up $150 to the winner of this week's Strictly
Stock race and that amount could grow to as much as
$200 depending on the number of cars that show up to race.
Pit gates open Saturday afternoon at 1 pm with division practice from 2-5:30
pm. Grandstand gates open at 6 pm with qualifying for the Brighthouse
Challenge Super Late Models at 6:05 pm. Racing starts at 7:30 pm with 25 lap
features for the Mini Stocks and E-Modifieds. Following intermission, the
Brighthouse Challenge Super Late Models take to the track for 100 laps in the
Marion Edwards, Jr. Memorial followed by 25 laps for the Sportsman cars and
the evening wraps up with a 20-lap shoot-out for the Strictly Stocks.
Adult admission is $20 with all seniors (65+) and military members with valid
ID being admitted for $18. Kids 11 and under are free. If you bring a copy of
your most recent Brighthouse Networks bill, you will get $5 off adult
admission (limit two per household).
