Don likes to write history as he remembers it to be.
Even as a kid in NY in the 70's, my weekly racing paper covered some of the Fla action, especially in the winter month, when our weekly guys like Buzzie and Cagle spent their winters here.
Even in the Mid 70's the Sprint cars in Fla had wings.... not all of them, but most. It was still a new concept at the time.

Most??
there was not any..ANY wing races in florida on pavment. Fact.
I don't rember the first one with wings for tbara but it was after 1991.
We did run a few STARS wing sprints on pavement in the winter.
I did 1 of them a Lakeland.
None of the local sprint races ran with wings
I love it when a northern know it all tells us what we did or how they did it up north.
Get some rubber boots and go back..lol

Did buz drive any wing sprint pavement races?? I don't think so. if so not many.
Who knows about up north?
We had the same papers here and I wasent a kid and don't rember much about him in sprints . Most of what we read was about mod dirt racing.
At home buz was a late model dirt hero. He didn't race in newyork but a few years but a lifetime right here. A local ledgend on pavement and dirt.
OPPs sunshine did have a race for 3 years in the winter with our local sprints and supper mods from NY in the same race. If I rember they did put wings on the sprints...well who won??? a florida sprint with a 315 ci v8....
The south won
Was that in the northern papers?? 118
I didn't realize Buzzie and Cagle were from up North and wintered in FL. I always thought they were from here and summered up there :-) I guess it's which side of the fence you're on.

If I'm not mistaken Supermodifieds weigh at least 500 lbs more than Sprint Car. That hardly seems like a fair fight on a short track. Even with gobs more HP...
"I can and I will speak from "EXPERIENCE" From a drivers stand point NON WING is by far harder to drive."--Outlaw
Great admiration for you, sir!
A question, though...which would you rather drive?
Is the answer the same for asphalt & dirt?
My guess is--no wing on pavement and wing on dirt.
Non wing on both but I did drive more with a wing because of demographies....
as a low budgeted time I was able to have better finishes without the wing Old School....It is TWO (2) entirely different ways of driving..with a wing and without.... dirt or pavement
I personally witnessed wings on at Golden Gate in either 82 or 83.... not 91.
The ONE RACE against the northern Supers was actually a series of several races, at several tracks, over multiple years. Pretty much dominated by guys like Ollie Silva in SUPERS... not a Fla car with a 318.
As for Buzzie & Cagle..... they ran full seasons of Modifieds from about April to October up there. They ran here in the winter months. Although they were always listed as being from Zephyrhills and Tampa, they spent 8 months a year there, compared to 4 down here. Add Wayne Reutimann and Gary Balough to the same scenario.
Don't let Dons version of history sway you from the TRUTH about history.
"[I prefer to drive] Non wing on both [dirt and asphalt]."--Outlaw
Good that you can drive both!
My thinking was based on being "planted" with a wing. Or, to put it another way, a Daytona type experience vs an Indy one.
That is, on pavement, no wing gives more of a conventional experience of sliding and etc. I also think the car is set up more for left side percentage (correct?).
On dirt, everything balances on the right rear donut, and one bad bump and you flip 23 times. Seems like a wing would push the thing downward and perhaps provide a tick more comfort.
I understand that your cornering speed will go way up, and perhaps negate the effect. Net-net, I am uncertain...
