ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD TRIES AGAIN FRIDAY NIGHT
After three weeks off for a car show, Crash-A-Rama and last week's rain out,
stock car racing returns to Orlando SpeedWorld Friday night with a six
division program and what looks to be a much better weather forecast..
The popular Sportsman cars return this week and will be joined by the Super
Stocks, Legend Cars, Strictly Stocks, Four Cylinder Stocks and Bandoleros.
Gates open Friday afternoon at 4 pm with grandstand gates opening at 6 pm and
racing beginning promptly at 8 pm. Adult admission is $12 with all seniors
(65+) and military with valid ID admitted for $10. All kids 11 years of age
and under get in free.
Orlando SpeedWorld will be turning 40 years old in August, and to celebrate,
the track will bring general admission (grandstand) prices back to 1974 for
Friday night stock car racing. The new general admission price will be just
$5 per person with all kids 5 and under admitted free.
The $5 admission offer will start on September 5th and is for Friday night
racing on the oval only. No further discounts will be available, and the
offer is not valid for special events. More exciting info on this offer will
be available shortly as well as a other great promotions to be announced in
coming weeks.
The SpeedWorld complex opened with the drag strip running it's first events in
1965. Nine years layer, the oval track was completed and the first event was
held on a Sunday afternoon, August 18th, 1974. There were no lights, no
permanent restrooms and the grass in the infield had yet to be planted, but a
large field of cars showed up running two classes under NASCAR sanction.
Veteran driver Gene Johnson of Ft. Pierce won the Late Model feature that day
after a great battle with Dan Daughtry. Johnson's stepson, Doc McKinney,
still competes from time to time at Orlando SpeedWorld to this day. Fans who
were there on that horribly hot afternoon will remember a grinding head-on
crash between Wayne Heckle and Don Hatcher that happened right in front of the
packed grandstand. Both drivers emerged unhurt and would go on to win many
races at SpeedWorld during their careers.
The first feature race on that opening day was a Limited Sportsman race that
was won by the late Ed Meredith, then a 16-year high school student who would
go on to be one of Central Florida's top racers.
The track closed briefly after a final "regular season" race on September 29th
in order to have the necessary improvements made to satisfy both Orange County
and NASCAR before the track's first major event, a NASCAR-sanctioned Late
Model Sportsman race called the Permatex 100 on November 24, 1974.
This Fall should present some awesome racing for fans at "1974" prices... now
all we have to do is bring back 1974 gas prices!
