TBARA SPRINTS SET FOR ACTION SATURDAY NIGHT AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY
ALL MOMS GET IN FREE!!
The always popular Tampa Bay Area Racing Association (TBARA) Outlaw Winged
Sprint Cars return to New Smyrna Speedway Saturday night along with a full
card of racing that also includes the Sportsman Cars, E-Modifieds, Super
Stocks and Strictly Stocks. In honor of Mother's Day, all moms will get into this
week's program absolutely free.
A very good field of Sprint Cars are expected Saturday evening but one driver
who won't be in attendance will be TBARA point leader Joey Aguilar who has
been set down by the club for the remainder of the year for "unsportsmanlike
conduct" during recent victory lane celebrations after he actually won the
races. This leaves car owner Jimmy Alvis with a bit of a dilemma as his team
leads the TBARA owner standings but he now has no regular driver. It's
unknown at this time if the car will be there with another driver behind the
wheel. Rumor had Mickey Kempgens possibly taking over but that will not be
happening. Kempgens will be at New Smyrna but will be driving a car owned by
Tom Rice. Kempgens, who calls Tampa home, just recently returned to racing
after suffering a broken collarbone in an off-track incident.
Another driver who runs very well at New Smyrna is Scotty Adema of Fort Myers
who says the high-banked half mile is his favorite track. Not only will Adema
have his car to run but he's bringing a second car for "Flyin'" Ryan Partin of
Orlando. Partin, best known for his exploits on Florida's dirt tracks and the
2009 Top Gun Series champion, will be making his first start at New Smyrna on
the asphalt.
Shane Butler of Bushnell is currently second in TBARA driver points and is
poised to take over the top spot but Ocala driver Ben Fritz is not far behind
in third place. Leesburg's Dude Teate and Matt Alfonso of Tampa are fourth
and fifth in points while New Smyrna Mini Stock veteran Rex "Boneman"
Hollinger sits sixth in points in just his second full season behind the wheel
of a Sprinter. TBARA's lone lady driver, Wendy Mathis of Brooksville,
returned to action after a long layoff in the club's most recent race at
Orlando SpeedWorld and she is expected in the field this week as well.
Other drivers expected to take part include Dave Retzlaf, rookie point leader
Chris Gimmler, Tommy Nichols, young sensation Ty DeCaire, Larry Brazil, Jr.,
Mike Tharpe and Herb Neuman, Jr. who has made the move from full-bodied Late
Model Stock Cars to the Sprints. Also now confirmed in the field will
be Sport Allen of Tampa who has scored wins in his last two races, on Dirt two
weeks ago at East Bay Raceway and last week at Showtime Speedway in St.
Petersburg on asphalt. Allen wheels the famous Dayton-Andrews Dodge Sprint
Car owned by former racer Taylor Andrews.
The TBARA has added an extra $100 to every finishing position for this event
as it will pay $1100 to win and $400 to start. The Sprint Cars will open the
evening with heat races at and their 30-lap feature will follow the night's
intermission. During the intermission, the TBARA drivers will hold a meet &
greet autograph session behind the grandstands.
Fans will also be treated to some great NASCAR Whelan All-American Series
action as the Sportsman cars return after a brief layoff. Only two Sportsman
races have been held so far this season with Chris Brannon of Osteen the
victor on April 5th and Mulberry's Brandon Morris the winner of a special
50-lap race on April 12th. A nice field is expected including the likes of
Donny Williams, Richard Goodrich, Earl "Junior" Beckner, Garrett Hill, Mike
Pletka, Scott Garrity, D. J. Farr and more.
The Super Stocks have seen four different winners in four races so far with
Mike Trocki, Shannon Kelly, Garrett Hill and Justin Reynolds all visiting
Gibson Truck World victory lane. Expect another big field of Super Stocks
Saturday as drivers like Bobby Holley, Mike Amato, David Gould, Danny Frye,
Joe Gerard and Becca Samsoe and many others will be seeking their first win of
the season.
Meanwhile, the E-Modified class has been the personal stomping ground of
defending track champion Jarrett Korpi of Deltona all year so far. Korpi has
won three of the four races contested and already has a healthy point lead.
Pit gates open Saturday afternoon at 3 pm with practice by division from
4-6:10 pm. Grandstand gates open at 6 pm with racing beginning at 7:30 pm.
Adult admission this week is $20 with all seniors (65+) and military members
with valid ID being admitted for $18. Kids 11 and under are free of charge and
remember all moms also get in absolutely free this week.
