No driver won three AMA titles before going NASCAR... Both Joe Weatherly and Paul Goldsmith won several AMA National Championship RACES but never the season-long championship...
The only driver to win three AMA Grand National (dirt track) Championships and go on to a successful auto racing career was Joe Leonard. Leonard won the title in 1954, 1956 and 1957 but ran mostly Indy Cars with USAC. Leonard raced in the USAC Championship Car series from 1964–1974 making 98 career starts, including the 1965–1973 Indianapolis 500, sitting on the pole in 1968 in the Lotus 56 turbine car. He finished in the top ten 60 times in USAC and won six times, half which were at Milwaukee Mile. He was very consistent which led to Leonard winning both the 1971 and 1972 USAC Indy Car Championship. Thus he is the only driver to win both an AMA and a major auto racing title in his career... As far as Stock Cars, Leonard ran most of the USAC Stock Car season in 1964 winning one race at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds... His only start in NASCAR was the 1969 Firecracker 400 at Daytona driving a Ford for Smokey Yunick... he crashed and finished 31st...

I guess I'll throw my two cents in..... Jim Hurtubise won in a Plymouth on March 27th 1966 with #56 at Atlanta Motor Speedway in the Atlanta 500... He beat Fred Lorenzen. Car owner was Norm Nelson.

I guess nobody had a guess on this one..... after a little more research, there were actually seven drivers who won their first race at the Daytona 500.

    Tiny Lund (1963)
    Mario Andretti (1967)
    Pete Hamilton (1970)
    Derrike Cope (1990)
    Sterling Marlin (1994)
    Michael Waltrip (2001)
    Trevor Bayne (2011)

The driver that sometimes carried a chicken in his racecar was chicken farmer Junior Johnson. Why he did it...... that's anybodys guess.

1950 Bill Rexford, one win and championship. No luck on the chicken.
