Yeah man, it was a good night at BRP. The All Star sprints and the UMP modifieds were, as the kids would say, "in the house". Then throw in Tony Stewart, Steve Kinser, Ken Schrader and about 60 others, mix in plenty of advertising, and "poof", like magic the place was packed. Even at $30 for a grandstand ticket, the boards were 95% covered. What a relief to see a track have a great night!
The track lowered the ticket price for kids.
The Tony Stewart fans had a pretty good time. "Smoke" was fastest for a while during time trials, and he won the first heat using a last corner pass of the leader in traffic. He was a little quieter in the feature, but hung in for a good finish.
I noticed that both BRP and East Bay both ran the UMP modifieds on the same night. It actually worked out somehow. This group brings a ton of cars and lots of locals join in the fun. East Bay had 37 and BRP had 26 or so. No problem: the show still ran until 12:30, and sometimes 6 modified heats and 3 "B" mains can be a bit much.
Kenny Schrader brought a modified, and over the years has proven himself to be a very smooth and clean driver in the Winter Nationals. On nights at Volusia when most of the field have mangled their cars, his remains pristine and fast. But not last night. Kenny was caught up in a first lap crash that found him on the hook and out for the night.
I wasn't too happy about Steve Kinser's night. He was the last car to qualify from the "B" main, and wasn't competitive in the feature.
Great weather, lots of cars and plenty of company!
