All throughout 2008 fans and drivers have heard about the Inside Florida Racing Driver of the Year program sponsored by Pandora Jewelers of Deerfield Beach, Florida.

It all began in January with the Pandora Jewelers Driver of the Month pick of short track standout Jeff Choquette, and concluded with December’s winner Steve Darvalics.  There were seven winners who raced primarily on asphalt and 5 who run dirt.

Real Racin’ USA Media

“We beat Loose Cannon 1st round with a 4.95 @ 228mph – 2.92 @ 207 mph at the half. In the semi’s things came undone literally. The blower came apart, it lifted, broke the pulley and crank, big boom and lots of fire. It burnt most of the wiring, air lines, new computer stuff, etc. Engine swap was no problem.”

If you think the above is about drag racing, you are right. But Hot Licks Racing doesn’t travel on on dry land, oh no these bad dragsters blast past the 200 mph barrier in a 1/4 mile on the water. The fuel lines are 3 and 1/2 inches in diameter. Bad Fast!

From the Hot Links web site:
“The basics of drag boat racing are very similar to those of land drag racing. It is an acceleration race over a measured quarter mile straightaway on water between two high performance race boats.

However, drag boats us a slight moving start. This starting system was implemented as a safety precaution because it is difficult for a boat driver to determine if the boat will launch straight from a standing start.

As two boats are “paired up” on the holding rope, a countdown clock begins before the boats get the green light. During competition, if either boat crosses the starting line before the green light is illuminated, it is disqualified.”

Dennis Gibson, owner of Hot Licks Racing joins hosts Rick Anges and Jack Smith on Tuesday night’s Real Racin USA Live show on March 11. Dennis got started in this sport in 2002 with the purchase of “Hot Licks”, the first of the drag boats the team races.

Are Race Fans Safe At The Track?

by BJ Cavin

Last week I wrote about safety at the racetrack for drivers. This week I am continuing to look at safety at the track, but this time from the standpoint of the fans. If you are a fan of local racing and you have attended events at many different race tracks, you probably have [...]

Racing Shows Cancelled for Coming Week

All shows scheduled through the remainder of October have been canceled due to illness. Several members of my family, including myself, have been sidelined for a while by a very bad virus. We encourage race fans to take advantage of flu shots, we unfortunately did not get them in time.
Both my young grand daughter and [...]

Safety First! Or is it?

by BJ Cavin
If you watch NASCAR racing on television on a regular basis, you might believe that race car drivers are all about safety. They certainly go out of their way to appear to be safety conscious, but are they really?

Most are, but some may not be so safety minded when the TV cameras [...]

The Thrill Of The Short Track

Not many racing fans have had the chance to climb into a race car and experience first hand what it feels like to rocket around a racetrack. All of us cannot be race car drivers, and most of us will never get to experience the thrill and exhilaration that high speeds on [...]

Maintaining the Balance

by BJ Cavin
Recently I was discussing racing with a friend when it became apparent to me that we were seeing things from two totally different perspectives.  As a driver, he was looking at the situation with his interests and opinions at heart.  As someone who works for a speedway, I was seeing it with the [...]

Attempting To Fool Mother Nature

by BJ Cavin
We cannot control the weather. All we can do is adapt to whatever it does, and sometimes that includes getting out of the way. Each region of our country has weather extremes, and those extremes have an effect on racing in those regions. Here in Florida we [...]

Tne Corporate Battle Off The Track

by BJ Cavin
Everyone has heard about the ongoing mess between NASCAR, Childress Racing, Sprint, and AT&T. As primary sponsor of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, Sprint was guaranteed a non competition arrangement that “grandfathered” in sponsorships that previously existed with participating race teams, but did not allow new names to enter as sponsors. So when [...]

Separating Fact From Fiction

by BJ Cavin
Go to any race track and you will find that gossip, rumors, and speculation, are as much a part of the racing world as are the cars and drivers. And if you don’t believe this, then look at NASCAR and the media circus that surrounds it! Why do you think that [...]

Learning To Appreciate Our History

By BJ Cavin
Someone told me not that long ago that I know very little about racing. Well, I know a lot more than I used to know, but I still have plenty to learn. You see, as far as stock car racing is concerned, I sort of grew up with a silver spoon in [...]
