Local
Florida short track racing news update followed by three stellar
example of the success of KART racing in America.
Rohn Moon
Many-time
WKA National Champion, and arguably Florida's most successful oval
karter in history. Rohn accomplished the impossible in 2001, capturing
FOUR national titles with the highly-competitive WKA Briggs and
Stratton National Dirt Series. Rohn also won many, many races at
the worlds largest karting event, the annual Dirt Track World Championships
at Municipal Stadium, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Simply making the
"A" main was an accomplishment, and Rohn was a dominating
force at the Stadium for many years in his feared black #56.
Dave
Evans
Is
a 65 year old resident of St. Petersburg, Florida. As a young boy
in the late 50's, Dave and his father would frequent the infamous
Raceway Park near Chicago, where Dave would cheer on one of the
winningest drivers of all time, Bud Koehler. In 1960, Dave was just
becoming interested in karting, when he happened to become the 10,000th
member of the Grand Prix Kart Club of America. This earned him a
new kart from Putt-Nik karting and a place on the team (expenses
paid) to race in Nassau Bahamas for the international kart race!
Almost 50 years later, Dave is still karting, competing in the TAG
Master class with the Florida Karting Championship Series, with
no plans of quitting any time soon! Dave proudly displays Bud Koehler's
#77 on his kart today, as a tribute to his boyhood hero.
Darrell Legg
Florida's
most "diversified" karting promoter, Darrell is unique
in Florida karting, in that he is currently operating both a local
karting-only facility (Hurricane Speedway in Cocoa, FL), and a series
that races at an existing Stock Car track (Central Florida Oval
Series). Darrell will discuss his decision to change Hurricane Speedway
from pavement to dirt (he laid dirt down on top of the asphalt),
share a few of the innovative activities he and wife Mindy have
scheduled at their facilities, and talk about the upcoming Florida
Dirt Divisional Series (FDDS) state race on July 11 at Hurricane
Speedway.
