The United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series returns to the dirt this weekend at North Florida Speedway.
"I am very excited about returning to North Florida", series promoter Ken Kinney said yesterday. "Calls are beginning to pour in and we expect a typical UDLMCS type car count."
A "typical UDLMCS car count" has produced some stellar turnout of talented dirt late model drivers this year. Over 170 drivers have competed in the series with an average car count of over 40 per race. Quite a feat when you consider the series is in its first year with a staff that Ken assembled over the winter and early spring.
Last month's dirt race on asphalt, the highly promoted "Battle on the Blacktop" drew the largest crowd Charlotte County has seen in many years and the teams that braved the asphalt put on a show that blew the fans away.
Ivedent Lloyd took top honors when the series visited North Florida Speedway in May. But points leader Johnny Collins is certainly going to be expecting an improvement over his 5th place finish there in the first race. Russell Brown Jr. had his best run of the year at North Florida and is still hanging there in the top 20 in points.
North Florida Speedway is located near Lake City, US Highway 41 appx 6 miles from I-75.The track phone number is 386-754-8800.
The 2008 United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series banquet is scheduled for Saturday, November 22. Tickets are normally $100 per person. But for a limited time only tickets will be ONLY $75 between now and the Brunswick race on Sept. 13.
The United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series 2008 Awards Banquet will be held at the prestigious Peabody Hotel in Orlando, Florida.
Promoter Ken Kinney is already in the final stages of preparing the 2009 schedule for what has quickly become one of the best driver and fan draws in the south. The new schedule will be announced at the Awards banquet. There will be an awards presentation to the drivers qualified for series points fund and also manufacturers awards, product give aways and gift certificates awarded. There will also be a dinner prepared by the 5 star Peabody staff.
Only attending members will be eligible for gift and points fund awards.
Contact Jody Smith 1-863-675-8888 for ordering tickets and more information. Or get your tickets this weekend at the Series trailer in the Pits at North Florida Speedway.
Dusty Cone Not Guilty On a side note leftover from the Charlotte County race, Dusty Cone was not actually illegal after all. At the request of Dusty Cone the series arranged for his engine to be tested to verify the engines displacement. The car was taken to an independent facility with another tracks tech personal and several engine builders present. The first test yielded the same results the series tech person found at the track. This was with a different displacement tester. Upon further testing and speaking with the equipment manufacturer the engine in the car was found to be legal. This was then verified with several more tests.
Provisions have been made to return points and earnings to Dusty Cone.
